• 28.10.11 100 Faces of Henley

Press release for 100 Faces of Henley.

Kick-start 2012 with the help of some familiar faces to promote the project

Local charity, The Face of Henley, is delighted to be celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2012. To raise awareness of the Charity and additional funds for worthy causes, The Face of Henley has teamed up with local photographers, Janet Hanton and Claire Smith, for a special portrait project entitled 100 Faces of Henley which is designed to celebrate (in photographs) the spirit and diversity of the community in Henley and the surrounding area.

In order to help promote the event, some familiar local faces recently took part in an early shoot for the project’s publicity material.

Harry Stott, a talented young actor and singer, was one of 3 boys selected in 2008 by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s TV show, ‘I’d do Anything’, to share the title role in the West End revival of Oliver!

Josette Ophiera will be familiar to the majority of shoppers in Henley as she has given dedicated service to WH Smiths in the town centre for 33 years!

Lady McAlpine is a very active and familiar figure in the local community and was delighted to support The Face of Henley by having her photograph taken. The McAlpine family has been based near Henley for many, many years.

Norman Topsom MBE is a Henley man through and through and a very familiar face to anyone who uses Henley and Twyford train stations as he has worked on the Henley branch line for almost 50 years!

Paul Daniels is a local man but is known to millions as one of the world’s most successful magicians and entertainers. He and his wife, Debbie McGee, a presenter on BBC Radio Berkshire, have both been very supportive of the 100 Faces of Henley project.

Sian Gordon, a reporter for The Henley Standard, is a very accomplished sportswoman who was part of the England Women’s U25 Lawn Bowls team to take a Gold Medal at the 2011 Atlantic Rim Championships.

Sarah Flindall, Trustee of the Charity, said; “This is a really exciting project and anyone can take part. Our aim is to create a visual representation of what makes the Henley community so diverse and so special. The idea is that people pop along to the Old Fire Station Gallery in Henley’s town centre any time between 10am and 5pm from Thursday 19th April - Tuesday 24th April 2012 to have their picture taken. Photo sessions will be free, quick and fun and there’s no need to make an appointment. The emphasis will be on capturing an interesting, character image that reflects a personality, job or hobby, so any relevant props people would like to bring along will be very welcome!”

Later in the year, from Thursday 27th September - Tuesday 2nd October, the Old Fire Station Gallery will host an exhibition of the 100 Faces of Henley chosen to best represent all aspects of the Henley community. Individual portraits will be available for sale together with a book featuring all 100 chosen portraits. There will also be the opportunity for visitors to the exhibition to vote for their favourite Face of Henley; the winner will become The 2012 Face of Henley and will be presented with a framed print of their picture worth over £200.

A fun evening was had by all with Mercers retaining the cup for another year after an exciting tie-break for the winning place between Mercers and Best of Henley. The quiz included rounds on Sport in 2010, Entertainment in 2010, Famous Cars, Royal Knowledge and London to name just a few. During a delicious salmon fishcake supper, the teams had to identify Famous Doctors and work out Football League Team anagrams. The wooden spoons went to The Ardmore Group.
